Lawton
is the third largest city in the state. It serves as a prominent shopping,
educational and religious center for the region, and the retail and distribution
center for the area's cattle, dairy and agricultural industries. In addition,
Lawton-Fort Sill is the home of manufacturing and processing companies, and is
continually working toward expansion of existing industries and acquisition of
new ones.

Fort
Sill was founded in 1869 by Major Philip Sheridan. At the beginning of the
Twentieth Century it seemed that the post would be abandoned following the
demise of other U.S. Army installations in Oklahoma. However, American leaders
decided in 1911 to utilize the post as an artillery training facility. Since
that time, it has remained an artillery center. Present day troop strength is
approximately 16,000 with civilian employees numbering about 5,758, and annual
military and civilian payroll totals more than $105 million.

Lawton
- Fort Sill is centrally located in the United States, in the heart of southwest
Oklahoma. Major cities located nearby included Oklahoma City, ninety miles
northeast of Lawton, and the Dallas / Fort Worth Metroplex, only three hours
southeast of the city. The area flows southward into a flat plain with the
Wichita Mountains serving as a dramatic backdrop to the north. Thousands of
tourists visit the National Wildlife Refuge in these mountains each year to
explore an area full of roaming wildlife, romantic history, picturesque scenes,
and the towering splendor of these mountains. The peak of Mt. Scott, which
towers 2,465 feet above sea level, can be reached by venturing the winding road
that climbs above the refuge floor. The Holy City of the Wichitas is located
nearby. This is the site of the famous Easter Pageant held each year on Easter
Eve. The structures are recreations of the ancient city of Jerusalem and are
open to the public for viewing.
